Death: February 5, 1918 in the North Channel between Scotland and Ireland; cause of death drowning when his transport ship SS Tuscania en route to Europe was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-Boat U-77. Of 2,000+ passengers, at least 201 American troops perished. Many passengers were rescued. Some of the dead washed ashore and were buried in Scotland.
