Death: Corporal Allen James Excell was honorably discharged on 12/21/1917, just a few months after enlisting, and was noted to be 50% disabled. It is not known if his death one month later was related to his military service, a pre-existing condition, or to the football injury noted on the death certificate. He died on January 27, 1918 in Cleveland, OH at age 21 at Dalrymple Hospital, 26 Streater Ave. [2028 E. 100th St.]. The cause of death as recorded on the death certificate was gangrene of the small intestine, abscess omentum, injury football, with a contributory cause of acute dilitation of the heart.
