Action: trained at Camp Syracuse, Syracuse, NY; Co H 23rd Infantry 2nd Division; served overseas from 9/7/1917 until his death; enemy raid 4/3/1918 and Allied Offensive 7/18/1918. Per the 23rd Infantry unit history in https://www.lonesentry.com/unithistory/23rd-infantry/index.html, "On 18 July, 1918 [the day Private Kulowiak was killed in action], Marshal Foch hurled all his best divisions against the west side of the German positions at Soissons. Among them was the 2nd Division with the 23d Infantry. The Regiment made a spectacular sweep, marching and fighting for three days and nights, undergoing untold hardships. The results were astounding. The German lines were penetrated to a 5 mile depth and thousands of prisoners were captured. This drive started the German retreat, which ended in the signing of the Armistice."
