Death: December 6, 1917 at age 34 near the Isles of Scilly off the coast of Cornwall, England; cause of death: Killed in Action and Died at Sea in the wreck of the U.S.S. Jacob Jones when it was torpedoed by the German submarine U-53. Of the 110 men on board, 64 perished, most lost at sea. Water Tender George Dolezal was said to have been "On watch in steaming fireroom. No one in this location was able to get on deck." [There are first-hand witness accounts by survivors on various online sites related to the sinking of the U.S.S. Jacob Jones.]
