Action: Co M 9th Infantry, which fought in the Battle of Belleau Wood from June 1-26, 1918, during which time Corporal or Sergeant Albert Diamond was killed. No additional military information found.
Next of Kin: Miss Minnie Diamond, sister, c/o Dr. S. Peiser [see below], 5000 Woodland Ave., Cleveland, OH, which was the location of the Jewish Orphan Asylum.
Additional Information: According to the 1910 Census, Albert [name recorded as Abraham at that time, which was his Hebrew name as it appears in Hebrew on his gravestone] Diamond, age 13, and his sister Minnie Diamond, age 11, were "inmates" of the Jewish Orphan Asylum at 5000 Woodland Ave., Cleveland, OH at the corner of Woodland Ave. and Sawtell (later E. 51st St.). The facility was founded in 1868 by B'nai B'rith, the Jewish service organization, and provided care to approximately 400 orphaned and/or impoverished children, many of Eastern European ancestry. Rabbi Simon Peiser [mentioned under next of kin above] was the assistant superintendent between 1913-1919. Siblings Albert and Minnie were born in New York and were of Russian ancestry.
Father: Isaac Diamond, married 1896 but no additional information found; Mother: Esther Muffson Diamond (1871-1936), a widow in 1910, employed as a nurse, and living as a boarder at a home on E. 29th St. in Cleveland, buried at Chesed Shel Emeth Cemetery, Cleveland, OH; Siblings: Minnie Diamond Blumenstock (1899-1977), at age 20 in 1920 living with her mother and working as a stenographer, married at age 20 on 11/28/1920 to Clifford Blumenstock, appears to have had no children, buried Mayfield Cemetery, Cleveland, OH. Sibling list may be incomplete.
