[Private John Richard Lawrence received the WWI French Croix de Guerre with Silver Star award for valiant service in action. He fought at the Battle of Belleau Woods, a battle that lasted from June 1 to June 26, 1918, claimed the lives of 1,811, and injured more than 10,000. It was a major turning point in the war. The heroic actions of the 5th Regiment of Marines, in which Private John Richard Lawrence served, earned them the right to wear the prestigious Fourragere braided shoulder cord decoration. Several members of the 5th Regiment received the Medal of Honor.]
